Veteran Hub journalist joining Banner staff
The Bay State Banner announced today that veteran
journalist Howard Manly has been named executive editor of the
Banner. Manly will assume his new post on August 15.
“I am delighted to welcome Howard to the Banner,’’
said Melvin B. Miller, the Banner’s publisher. “Howard
is extraordinarily talented and shares our vision of the future
and importance of the black press.’’
Manly will report directly to Miller and will have significant
responsibilities in running the day-to-day operations of the newspaper.
Manly will also report on local and national issues as well as
write a regular column.
“I’m glad to be home,” Manly said. “Over
the last 40 years, the Banner has gained a solid reputation and
I would like to build on those years of hard work.’’
Under the reorganization, Yawu Miller becomes senior editor.
Manly, 47, started his career at the New Bedford Standard-Times
in 1982. He has worked at the Washington Times, the Philadelphia
Inquirer, New York Newsday, Newsweek, the Boston Globe and the
Boston Herald. His free-lance articles have appeared in the Washington
Post, Black Enterprise, Washingtonian and Atlanta Magazine. He
is co-author of “Lift Every Voice,” a nonfiction account
of the internationally acclaimed Boys Choir of Harlem.
Manly is also a guest host for “Basic Black,” a public
affairs television show on WGBH.
Manly grew up in Washington D.C. and graduated from the St. Albans
School. He went on to graduate from Bucknell University in 1981
with a B.A. in International Relations.
