• Age — occurs more frequently in people older than 50
• Personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
• Certain inherited disorders, such as familial adenomatous polyposis or Lynch syndrome
• Inflammatory intestinal disorders — ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
• Diet and obesity
• Lack of exercise
• Smoking and alcohol
