On Dec. 9, political and judicial icons Johnny Ford and Joyce London Alexander were joined in matrimony. Ford is the founder of the World Conference of Mayors, National Conference of Black Mayors and Mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama. Alexander is the first Chief African American U.S. Judge. Over 700 luminaries, judicial, legal and political, family and friends from across the nation witnessed this occasion conducted by Bishop Eddie Long, pastor of the New Life Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia at the Tuskegee University Chapel. The New Years Eve festivities of First Night 2007 began around 1 p.m. and lasted until midnight. Events occurred throughout 30 indoor and outdoor venues. For “exemplary leadership and service” provided during his service in Iraq, Army Lt. Col. Kelvin R. Left to right: Toni Banks-Lewis, Julissa Diaz and Ashley Dailey of Roxbury recently graduated from the ABCD LearningWorks “First Steps” program. The free, 18 week course combines classroom instruction and practical internships to train adults for preschool teaching positions. Students take a college class in Child Growth and Development, trained in CPR and First Aid, children’s literature, portfolio development and curriculum planning.
