Political action necessary to close gap between haves and have-nots
The Banner’s editorials often emphasize African American self-reliance and hard work as keys to achieving economic advancement. Rightly so. But it was good, for a change, to see a different focus in your January 4th editorial, “Squeezing the middle class.”
There is an unhealthy and immoral gap between rich and poor in our country that has been widening steadily. Class warfare has been going on for quite a while, but the mainstream media tends to avoid the topic. If we subscribe to the still-to-be-fulfilled American vision of equality and a fair chance at a decent standard of living for everyone, then the Banner is right: those feeling the squeeze should “begin to mobilize in search of a more equal distribution of wealth.” Electing more candidates who share our vision of social and economic justice is a necessity.
Self-reliance is mainly a personal thing, but some political engagement is also required to help level the playing field. Democracy is not a spectator sport, as they say, and the progress we’ve achieved in recent elections is only a tantalizing hint of what the community can do when mobilized. The results of civic activism can be a fair chance for all of us, full inclusion and a stronger city, state and country.
