Dr. Lunine Pierre-Jerôme

A Cambridge College professor has been honored for her extraordinary efforts in the struggle against racism. Cambridge College’s Dr. Lunine Pierre-Jerôme is a recipient of the 13th Drylongso Award, an award given out by the Boston-based organization Community Change Inc. to honor ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the struggle to dismantle racism. Pierre-Jerôme was recognized for her outstanding work with the Association of Haitian Women in Boston as an advocate for immigrant women and their families.

Pierre-Jerôme is the coordinator for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Cambridge College, and has been with the college since April 2005. Pierre-Jerôme also works with the Boston Public Schools as a language acquisition coach, where she helps teachers of English language learners (ELL) develop and implement sheltering instruction strategies and methods in their classroom.

“As an immigrant woman from Haiti, receiving an award such as the Drylongso’s reminds me that I must not give up denouncing issues that have marked my country’s history for more than 500 years,” Pierre- Jerôme said.

“For example, issues of racism, gender bias, oppression, marginalization, illiteracy and social injustice, among others. For Cambridge College, this award means that there are conscious individuals on the staff who are aware of the social issues that minorities — especially women — face, and because of this awareness, we do strive to link equity with excellence.”

Pierre-Jerôme was nominated by her former supervisor from Boston Public Schools, Dr. Berta Berriz, who is currently a teacher at the Summer School in Boston.
