Menino: Pay heed to the coming storm

Banner Staff

Mayor Thomas M. Menino is urging residents and commuters to plan ahead in preparation for the year’s first big snowstorm. Residents have been asked to check on elderly neighbors, contact emergency services for the homeless and use public transportation as often as possible.

“Forecasters are predicting snow, sleet and rain ... and I urge people to plan ahead,” Menino said. “Winter has returned. Our sanders and snow plows will be out on our streets, ready for whatever the storm may bring.”

Public safety is a main concern with the inclement weather. The mayor has urged residents to use common sense when traveling. It is recommended that, should citizens choose not to use public transit, they do not park cars within 20 feet of an intersection. Parking too close to intersections can restrict access for emergency vehicles, carrying a $40 fine and the likelihood that the car will be towed.

The snow around fire hydrants should be shoveled out well, and space savers must be removed from the street 48 hours after a storm.

Boston EMS also reminds people to practice caution when shoveling and clearing ice, as it may be dangerous for those with a heart condition.

Residents should call the mayor’s 24-hour constituent hotline at 617-635-4500 for fallen tree limbs or to get help for elderly neighbors or the homeless.

School has not yet been cancelled, though it is advised that residents check in periodically for cancellations by calling the constituent hotline or visiting the city’s Web site at www.cityofboston.gov, as well as Boston Public Schools’ Web site at www.boston.k12.ma.us.

Menino is also reminding residents to take advantage of the city’s Snow Advisory and Information service, “Know Snow.” Residents can sign up to receive a notification when a snow emergency is declared, either by calling the constituent hotline or visiting www.cityofboston.gov/snow.
