USS John F. Kennedy sails into Boston Harbor on March 1 for a five-day final visit to the 35th president’s home state. The aircraft carrier will be decommissioned later this month in Florida. The Kennedy, with a crew of about 4,600, is more than 1,050 feet long, displaces 82,000 tons and can carry 70 combat aircraft. Dorchester resident Andre Tilahun, an eighth-grader at The Rivers School in Weston, was awarded a Silver Key last month from The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, a competition that judges artwork in a variety of media from students across Massachusetts. Tilahun won for the above photograph “Self Portrait with Straw in My Mouth,” which was judged against 3,560 entries from nearly 400 Massachusetts public, private and parochial schools. The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) in Dorchester held an open house Feb. 28 at their office in Upham’s Corner. About 100 people attended to learn about programs, meet staff and community members and enjoy music and dancing.
