Just in time for Mothers’ Day, Kenneth Guscott gestures to a portrait of his late mother, Rubina Guscott, at a ceremony on Saturday, May 5 that named an iconic building at the corner of Warren St. and Blue Hill Ave. after the family matriarch. The building was built in the same year of Rubina’s birth in Jamaica, and was dedicated in honor of her immigrant roots and contributions to public life. Suzanne de Passe, who brought The Jackson 5 to Motown Records, delivered the Third Annual Balfour Distinguished Lecture on Diversity in the Semel Theater at Emerson College on April 19. About 100 people attended de Passe’s lecture. She discussed the challenges and obstacles she has faced during a 40-year career that has made her one of the most influential African American women in the entertainment industry.
