Alfreda Harris
Boston School Committee member Alfreda Harris recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association.
Harris has long been recognized for her work with Boston youth, particularly with young women, around the connection between athletics and academics and her enduring commitment to helping prepare all students for higher education.
“Alfreda Harris’ dedication to the well-being of our students, particularly our young girls, has been an asset to Boston,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
A resident of Roslindale, Harris was first appointed to the School Committee in 1993 and is its longest serving member.
“Alfreda Harris has been a tireless advocate for students and student athletes in the Boston Public Schools,” said Boston School Committee Chair Elizabeth Reilinger. There are entire families across this city whose members have benefited from the dedication and hard work of Alfreda Harris.”
“Alfreda Harris is well known throughout the city for her unwavering commitment to ensuring that all students in Boston are challenged, supported and prepared for college,” said Superintendent Michael G. Contompasis. “Her impact on the city is immeasurable.”
Harris has worked in many roles supporting the physical development of students across the city, including Deputy Commissioner of the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and head women’s basketball coach at the UMass-Boston, Emerson College and Roxbury Community College, where she also attended.
