Partners HealthCare program helps Andre Chandler launch his health care career at Massachusetts General Hospital
Two years ago, Andre Chandler had just been laid off from his job at a local bank where he had worked nine years as a check sorter. Today, he is a Surgical Pathology Technician at Massachusetts General Hospital, and making plans to return to school for additional education in his chosen health care career.
Chandler took advantage of the Partners in Career and Workforce Development Program (PCWD), a three-year-old initiative that has helped nearly 600 Boston residents get entry-level jobs or advance up the career ladder in three Partners HealthCare hospitals — Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Seven years in the making: Steppingstone Scholars are off to college
This fall, 70 Steppingstone Scholars from Boston are headed to four-year colleges throughout the U.S. These students are graduates of The Steppingstone Academy, a free academic program that prepares urban schoolchildren, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to gain admission to and succeed at top independent and public exam schools throughout Boston. At Ocean Spray, enhancing diversity takes on many forms

The problem, as Martin Mitchell sees it, is that too many businesses look at encouraging workplace diversity as a chore, something they have to do lest public perception of their brands suffer.
“Diversity is not a punitive thing,” said Mitchell, senior specialist in talent acquisition at Massachusetts-based Ocean Spray. “You can’t look at it as, ‘People will think we’re bad if we’re not diverse enough.’ It’s about more than that.”

MGH’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program opens doors to new career paths
The MGH Institute of Health Professions, an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital, is now accepting applications to its new Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Continuing the Institute’s nearly 30-year tradition of innovation, this program prepares advanced practice nurses for leadership roles in the increasingly complex management of health care delivery.
The DNP program builds on a master’s degree and provides nurses the scientific, business and technical knowledge they need to advance the evidence base of nursing and effect change in the health care system. Armed with these advanced skills, DNP-prepared nurses are prepared to seek senior-level positions in a variety of settings — whether as managers of quality initiatives, executives in health care organizations, directors of clinical programs, or faculty responsible for clinical teaching.
