Darren T. Wells, a Science Instructional Teacher Leader at the James P. Timilty Middle School in Roxbury, was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the National Teacher Advisory Council.

The Teacher Advisory Council, comprised of 12-15 elementary, middle and high school teachers from around the country, was established by the National Academies to work with the education research community in developing new research that is informed by and useful to education practitioners.

Members of the Teacher Advisory Council provide advice about how the National Academies can develop reports and recommendations that can most be implemented in schools.

The National Academies, a nongovernmental institution established by Congress, convenes committees of scientists and technology experts to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.

“Mr. Wells is a gifted and experienced teacher with a solid understanding of his subject area,” said Timilty Principal Valeria Lowe-Barehmi. “We are thrilled that he will have the opportunity to influence science policy on a national scale.”

Wells is a long-time resident of Dorchester. A Master Teacher in his 18th year as a science teacher at Timilty, Wells was selected for his classroom experience and leadership.

In 2005, he was the first teacher in Boston to win the Ambassadors in Education Award from the MetLife Foundation. In 2004, he received the U.S. Presidential Award in Science and Mathematics.
