Voices for a Climate Revolution Rally
Boston area residents concerned about the effects of global warming will hold the Voices for a Climate Revolution rally to call for strong political leadership now to tackle the problems of climate change. Speakers will include State Representative Frank Smizik; Senator Marc Pacheco; Jim Antal, Minister & President, Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ; and more. The rally will take place at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, 138 Tremont St., across from the Boston Common. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for the Green Connections Fair, and formal remarks will begin at 11:15 a.m. At noon, the event will conclude with a send-off of the “Revolutionary Ride” cyclists who will carry the Step It Up message along Paul Revere’s route on their way to attend the “Revolutionary Energy Rally” in Concord. Event is part of the nationwide ‘Step It Up’ Global Warming Campaign. Domestic Violence Awareness Event
The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry and Close to Home present “Raising our Voices!,” a unique and thought-provoking domestic violence awareness event from 2-5 p.m., First Church in Roxbury, 10 Putnam St., Roxbury. Free admission. State Rep. Gloria Fox will deliver the keynote address, followed by “Voices of Men,” a one-man play about domestic violence and sexual assault notable for its creative use of theatre to connect with a wide range of audiences. “Raising our Voices!” provides an engaging forum to explore community-based approaches to addressing domestic violence. Public Lecture on Restoring America’s Leadership in the Post-9/11 World. One of the nation’s leading human rights activists will explore the damage done to America’s international reputation as a result of policies pursued after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and how to regain leadership, in a public lecture at Simmons College in Boston. William F. Schulz, formerly executive director of Amnesty International USA, will deliver a free public lecture, “Restoring America’s Credibility: Human Rights in the Post-9/11 World,” at 5 p.m. in the Linda K. Smart is Cool!
The English High School, 144 McBride St. in Jamaica Plain will host a fun two-hour workshop from 6 – 8 p.m. to help students in grades 5-12 excel in school. The workshop features the authors of “Stop Flunking!” as well as instruction in speed reading, memory strategies, learning styles, free tutoring information, and organization skills. Guests can win prizes for attending the workshop, such as a Boost Mobile phone or $50 grocery store gift certificate. Refreshments and babysitting services will be provided. Free SOMWBA Workshop in Boston
The State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance (SOMWBA) will hold a free certification workshop at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Floor 2, Conference Room 4, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This workshop will present the requirements for state certification of minority (MBE) and women business enterprises (WBE), as well as for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (US DOT) disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) program. Professional staff will provide instruction on completing the certification applications. All applicants must attend one workshop.
