Afro-Cuban Poetry & Latin Jazz
Afro-Cuban Poetry and Images: Latin Jazz & Poetry Series. 1-hour music concert, 45 minutes poetry and images, open mike. Alan West-Duran and the “Sugarfoot” Coley Latin Jazz Unit. Poet, author, translator and professor Alan West-Duran, is a Cuban raised in Puerto Rico. West-Duran will be reading from his work as well as projecting images from his research on the Afro-Cuban Regla de Ocha (Santería). The images show different ceremonies such as receiving of necklaces, a cajón al muerto (that brings down spirits into the living), a violin for Ochún, and a spiritist mass. The Latin Jazz Unit is a tight, modern and versatile quartet, using the syncopated Afro-Cuban approach for their Latin jazz and folkloric music concert. This exciting music is firm and fluid; it holds your full attention for the hour concert, thanks to director “Sugarfoot” Coley’s multi-talented band members and his innovative, customized kit drumming. 7-10 p.m. JamaicaWay Books and Gifts, 676 Centre St., Jamaica Plain. Tickets: $7.50 with sliding scale for under 21. 617-983-3204 or 617-298-1790. No advance purchase.
