Michael Rubin

East Boston High School Headmaster Michael Rubin was recently honored by Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) for his years of dedicated work with students across Boston.

Rubin, of Mattapan, has been headmaster at East Boston High for the past five years, but has spent nearly 30 years at the school as a teacher, administrator and athletic coach. Colleagues praise his ability to connect with students and establish relationships based on trust and respect.

“We’re very thankful to have Mike Rubin as the leader at East Boston High School,” said Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. “His deep belief that all students can achieve and his dedication to ensuring every student is supported to succeed are hallmarks of a great headmaster.”

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Rubin was educated at boarding school in Connecticut, one of only 10 African American students in a school of 500, before attending Tufts University for a degree in education and the University of Massachusetts-Boston for a master’s degree in educational administration.

During his career, Rubin has served as a mentor to new principals and as a motivational speaker on youth issues, and has received numerous accolades for his work with students, both in the classroom and on the athletic field.

“I am humbled to receive this recognition,” said Rubin. “Every day provides a new opportunity to positively impact the lives of students. It is because of the dedicated staff of East Boston High School, as well as my fellow principals and headmasters and their staffs, that we are making progress and helping students graduate from the Boston Public Schools ready to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
