Talking About Community Violence: The Home for Little Wanderers hosts Community Violence Awareness Panel Discussion
The Home for Little Wanderers’ Safe-At-Home program is co-sponsoring “Community Violence: An Awareness Panel Discussion” from 10 a.m.-noon. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will be held at The Home’s Knight Children’s Center, 161 South Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain. Panelists include Anisha Chablani, Director Deputy of ROCA; Tina Chery, Founder, Louis D. Brown Peace Institute; Emmitt Folgert, Program Director of Dorchester Youth Collaborative; Phil Hindin, West Roxbury DYS Director; Michael Saunders, BCYF Streetworker Program Manager; and David Tavares, Director of the YMCA Emergency Family Shelter. Living Well Presents A Screening of “Rock Bottom”
“Rock Bottom” follows the journeys of seven gay men struggling with an addiction to crystal meth, and their recovery efforts against a threatening backdrop of HIV infection. From grappling with the drug’s effects on their physical and mental health to wrestling with their darkest sexual desires and sensitive identity issues, “Rock Bottom” delivers a chilling portrait of a community in crisis. Annual Birds & Bards Festival
Celebrating nature, arts and poetry in over 1,000 acres of greenspace in the geographic heart of Boston. At Franklin Park and Franklin Park Zoo, Boston Nature Center, Forest Hills Cemetery, and Arnold Arboretum. Six local conservation and cultural organizations are presenting the third annual “Birds and Bards Festival” the weekend of May 2-4 at Boston’s Franklin Park, Boston Nature Center, Forest Hills Cemetery, Zoo New England, Arnold Arboretum, and Jamaica Plain’s Wake up the Earth event. This celebration of birds, poetry, and nature offers activities for all ages, including bird walks early each morning, an evening movie, lectures, guided history and art walks, poetry, crafts, and choral music. Dining on Main Street Walk
Tour Four Corners and sample delicious food along the way! At 2:30 p.m. we meet at the Erie/Ellington Community Room, 31 Erie St., Dorchester to receive a pedometer and walk Four Corners water bottle. We will loop around the commercial district for a 1.5 mile walk, stopping at FIVE restaurants for refreshments. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who can sign a waiver for them. Stops along the way: Four Corners Pizza Cafe; Island Style Jamaican Restaurant; Nice N Clean Jamaican Cuisine; Right Taste Jamaican Restaurant ; Vaughan’s Fish & Chips. South End Baseball Opening Day
Parade And Celebration
Parade and ceremony to celebrate opening day of South End Baseball’s 22nd season. South End Baseball is the largest free youth baseball program in the country and serves kids ages 4-18 from communities including the South End, Roxbury, Dorchester and Chinatown. The event will be held in Peter’s Park, in the heart of the South End. In addition to the parade and brief remarks, there will be pony rides and carnival activities for the kids, music, refreshments and of course, an opening day baseball game. Parade leaves Villa Victoria Plaza at 10 a.m., 100 East Dedham St., Boston. Parade route travels throughout the South End (W. Dedham/Tremont/
Waltham/Shawmut ending in Peter’s Park) Ceremony and celebration at Luis Tiant Field, Peter’s Park at 10:30 a.m., 1201 Washington St., Boston. Baseball game begins at 1 p.m.

Summer Vacations in Northern New England
The Boston Athenæum presents an exhibition on vacationing in 19th century New England. “Always Delightfully Cool” — Summer Vacations in Northern New England, 1825-1900 opens on May 7 and runs through August 22, in The Boston Athenæum’s Norma Jean Calderwood Gallery. The Boston Athenæum is located at 10 ½ Beacon St. on Beacon Hill near the State House. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Macy’s Culinary Council Presents Dave Lieberman
12 p.m. Macy’s Downtown Crossing, Boston. Sample delicious culinary treats at a cooking demonstration with Macy’s Culinary Council Chef Dave Lieberman, host of Good Deals with Dave Lieberman, now in its fourth season on Food Network, as well as Dave Does, the network’s first Web-based cooking show. In celebration of Mother’s Day, Dave’s grandmother, Shirley Ivker will join Dave on stage. Following the demonstration, hosted by TV Diner’s Bill Costa, Dave will be available to autograph his cookbooks.

Roger Beattie Exhibit
The Grove Hall Library invites you to an exhibition of oil and acrylic paintings by Dr. Roger M. Beattie. Dr. Beattie is a former resident of Roxbury. He presently resides in Center Barnstead, New Hampshire. The exhibit is of representational works with Dr. Beattie’s keen eye for detail. The subjects of the paintings are seascapes, portraits, religious subjects and experimental expressionism. This exhibition will run from May 8 -May 31. The exhibit will open on May 8 with a reception for Dr. Beattie that begins at 5 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m. The Library is located at 5 Crawford St. in Dorchester.
