The Director of Development manages all fund raising activities and assumes primary responsibility for cultivation and stewardship of major gift prospects to secure outright or planned gifts. The position supervises the annual solicitation, the membership program, and development communications. Working with the Deputy Director, provides leadership in securing long-term support for educational and library programs, the horticultural care of the living collections, and major landscape projects. Working with the Director, provides support and coordination to raise research funds.
Develop a long-term, strategic plan to secure outright or planned gifts. Implement this plan through prospect research, recruitment, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects, including staff support to the Director for major gift solicitation. Identify and qualify new prospects, advance existing prospect relationships, procure gifts for current use or endowment, and develop planned gift commitments. Manage a three-person team overseeing the membership program, the annual solicitation, and related development communications. Maintain productive relationships with the University Development Office and senior development staff in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Basic requirements: B.A. and a minimum of five years of progressive fundraising experience that includes a successful record of major gift solicitation through outright gifts or planned giving.
Additional Requirements: A strong interest in the environment, plants, landscape or gardening is desirable. Experience in higher education and/or non-profits a plus. Will possess excellent public speaking, presentation and written communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills. Proven ability to manage and motivate staff and collaborate with volunteers, staff and senior leadership. Occasional travel and some evening/weekend work required.
