Taste of Cambridge Carnival
The Taste of Carnival is the kickoff event for the 15th year of Cambridge Carnival International festivities in Cambridge. The Taste of Cambridge Carnival will take place from 3-7 p.m. at the Broad Institute, 7 Cambridge Center in Kendall Square, Cambridge. Cambridge Carnival in Massachusetts is one of twenty-four North American Caribbean-style carnivals that combine wire-bending, costumes, masks, music, steelpan, street-parades, dancing, food and craft exhibits, to display the cultural diversity of the countries and Caribbean islands. Music on Film
The MFA Film Program is proud to present three screenings of Lorenzo De Stefano’s Cuban music documentary “Los Zafiros: Music from the Edge of Time.” Sunday, August 12, 12:20 p.m., Friday, August 17, 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, August 18, 12:15 p.m. Interviews (in Spanish) with Los Zafiros member Miguel Cancio may be arranged. Interviews may also be arranged with director Lorenzo De Stefano. This film is part of our “August Music on Film” series, which includes films on Anita O’Day, Nick Drake, and world music. Community Forum on the Roxbury Biolab.
Dorchester People for Peace invite you to a community educational forum on the Biolab, from 7–9 p.m. at the Vietnamese Cultural Center, 42 Charles St. in Fields Corner, Dorchester. Speakers include Klare Allen (Stop the Biolab Coordinator) and Laura Maslow Armand (Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights). Other invited speakers include Biolab community residents, state and federal attorneys, and local scientists. Art of Black Dance and Music (African dance and drumming)
and CV Drumbeats (Afro-Cape Verdean drumming)
Artist/Educator DeAma Battle founded the Art of Black Dance and Music, which celebrates over 30 years of fostering understanding between cultures. ABDM’s dynamic group of professional educators delivers a rich repertoire of African-rooted culture. The rich and diverse heritage of the African Diaspora is reflected in the lifestyles of people of the Caribbean, the Americas and some thirteen other geographic locations around the world. CV Drumbeats is the brainchild of Antone Fonseca and specializes in Afro-Cape Verdean Drumming. A Boston Police sergeant by day, Tony has translated his love of drumming into a teaching tool at centers throughout the city and has engaged hundreds of young people with the art of drumming. 10:30 a.m. A presentation of the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park Free Summer Performing Art Series. The Playhouse is located just off the main park road, next to the ball fields between White Stadium and the Franklin Park Zoo. OrigiNation and the O’Shea Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance (hip hop and Irish step dance), and Serious Bizness featuring Ray Greeene (R&B)
The dancers of OrigiNation are dedicated to promoting the importance of self-respect, health, nutrition, education and self-esteem, while emphasizing the impact that African influences have had on dance. Under the direction of choreographer Shaumba Yandje Dibinga, they specialize in hip-hop, jazz, tap, step and Caribbean dance. The O’Shea Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance presents their combination of traditional and contemporary Irish dance and costumes. Their performances have won them accolades and awards, nationally and internationally. Founded in Galway by Rita O’Shea 50 years ago, the Academy has been based in Boston for over 40 years now. These two companies dance together for some explosive cross-cultural hip-step-hop. 6 p.m. A presentation of the Elma Lewis Playhouse in the Park Free Summer Performing Art Series. Harborwalk Sounds presents Ricardo Vogt
Singer and Guitarist Ricardo Vogt from Santa Cruz, Brazil, started playing piano at 4 and guitar at 9. He moved to Boston after being awarded the World Tour Scholarship from Berklee while attending the University of Wisconsin. He is a faculty member.
