Race, Culture, Identity and Achievement Seminar Series
4-6 p.m. Judge Luis G. Perez of the Worcester Juvenile Court will deliver the third lecture in this year’s Race, Culture, Identity and Achievement Seminar Series. Judge Luis G. Perez will address the topic, “Preventive Approaches to Youth Violence.” The talk will take place at the Mildred Avenue School, 5 Mildred Ave., Mattapan. We want to urge teachers, students, parents, community activists and juvenile justice professionals to attend this session. We expect to have a lively conversation about how we can all work together to support the healthy development of young people. A reception will follow Judge Perez’s presentation and community conversation. Provides vital information on the importance and application of “purpose” in study and education. Boston Grooves 4 NOLA
Boston Grooves 4 NOLA is bringing a taste of New Orleans to Boston at 8 p.m. at the Milky Way Lounge and Lanes, 403-405 Centre St., Jamaica Plain. Featured performers include the New Orleans artistic trio TREMÉ. Through a collage of trumpet, guitar, spoken-word, and song, spoken-word artist Asali DeVan, acoustic, reggae guitarist, Ben Hunter, and trumpeter Troy Sawyer honor the 300 year old neighborhood Tremé, known as the birthplace of Jazz, and therefore, the birthplace of American music. Also performing is Boston’s own, Berklee’s Hip Hop Ensemble. This 10-piece ensemble transforms the sample-based art form of Hip-Hop into a live band experience. 617-524-3740; (21+). Racism/War: Making Connections for Peace

Iraq war veteran Alector Tavares, Boston Workers’ Alliance, Project HIP-HOP, District 7 Roundtable, and City Councilor Chuck Turner are on the program. There will be testimonies, performances, short talks, discussion, and mobilizing for action to stop US war at home and abroad against poor people and people of color. Free and open to the public. Free SOMWBA Workshop in Boston
The State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance (SOMWBA) will hold a free certification workshop at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, 401 Park Dr., Boston, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This workshop will present the requirements for state certification of minority (MBE) and women business enterprises (WBE), as well as for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (US DOT) disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) program. Professional staff will provide instruction on completing the certification applications. All applicants must attend one workshop.
