Despite Arroyo’s loss, Mass. Latinos still well positioned for political impact
In response to a recent letter to the editor in the Bay State Banner by Jaime Bautista (“What’s wrong with Boston’s Latino progressive movement?” Nov. 22, 2007): While the criticism is taken constructively, the writer apparently failed to do the necessary research to look at the situation outside the greater Boston area.
¿Oíste? has done extensive outreach and organizing throughout the state in order to strengthen the political climate and develop leadership and advocacy strategies at a local level. In this past election, ¿Oíste? — the only Latino political organization in Massachusetts — collaborated with many grassroots-based organizations, including Arise for Social Justice, the NAACP’s Greater Springfield Chapter, and Neighbor 2 Neighbor, to challenge the antiquated at-large system in Springfield. Those efforts resulted in a binding referendum allowing not just more Latinos, but also other underrepresented communities, the prospect of greater participation in the democratic process.
It takes great strategy to organize, but it also takes a solid commitment to build coalitions in order to gain any accomplishments. While we can’t do it all, we are certain that we are on the right path to political balance in Massachusetts.

“Sober” story an eye-opener for community
I would like to thank the Banner for Kenneth J. Cooper’s special report (“‘Sober houses’ under legal review by city,” Dec. 13, 2007). I am the parent of children that participate in a Pop Warner program that practices on the field behind the Shelburne Center — which is right down the street from these homes. I had no idea that the homes housed such a program! I am both shocked and disgusted that officials in the city’s parks and permits department would put children in such a precarious position. I am going to petition for another practice location for my children’s program.
Thank you for bringing this important piece of information to my attention. I will be sure that the parents of the other children are aware as well.
