Roxbury Community College:
A first-class learning experience,
right in your own backyard

Ted Thomas

Roxbury Community College (RCC) is a comprehensive, urban, student-centered, open-access community college providing higher learning opportunities for all who may benefit. Easy to reach by car or public transportation, RCC’s primary mission is to serve the needs of the diverse greater Roxbury area and the surrounding Boston metropolitan communities.

RCC’s dynamic learning environment offers students the opportunity to earn associate degrees and certificates. Quality post-secondary higher education learning opportunities are available in developmental academic skills, the liberal arts and sciences, career and transfer programs, workforce development, and private and public sector training.

When deciding which college to attend, there are several reasons to consider Roxbury Community College:

• RCC is affordable, which makes receiving a quality higher education less of a financial burden;

• The college has a low student-to-faculty ratio, making it easier for students and faculty members to work closely together. Studies have shown that overall student progress improves when pupils have close proximity to their instructors.

• RCC features an ethnically and internationally diverse student population representing more than 50 nationalities. The richness and importance of diversity in the learning experiences of RCC students cannot be overstated, in large part because it helps to prepare them for life in a diverse world.

The success of Roxbury Community College students is a source of great pride for administrators, faculty and staff. Whether moving on to a four-year college, joining the workforce or fulfilling a personal commitment to improve an existing knowledge base, RCC students do very well.

To assist students in their quest for excellence, the college offers a number of important student services. Student Health Services, for example, offers walk-in first aid care and provides referrals to area clinics and hospitals. Career and Transfer Services (CTS), among other things, assists students who are undecided about their career focus or who need more information before selecting a career.

CTS also provides internships, which give students exposure to career areas that can help them both choose a major and secure compensated employment. Finally, CTS helps students find part-time and full-time career opportunities after graduation.

RCC’s educational philosophy also includes the development of the social and physical potential of its students. Students at RCC can participate in a wide range of excellent student activities. Among the many activities sponsored by the Student Activities Department are the Student Government Association (SGA), student clubs, dances, lectures, special performances and community outreach events.

The college’s student clubs enrich the overall educational experiences of students by offering significant learning outside of the classroom. Among the many student clubs currently active at Roxbury Community College are the African Club, the Bible Club, the Business Club, the Creative Writing Club, the Haitian Club, the Theater Arts Club, and the Union Estudiante Latino Americana Club.

RCC’s Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center continues to host world-class events, including the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships, the Bay State Games and other notable events.

The college’s Athletic Department continues to build stellar men’s and women’s basketball and track teams, and has added soccer to its list of varsity sports.

Roxbury Community College received national recognition last June when it received a grant to become a part of the “Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count” initiative, making it one of only four Massachusetts community colleges to be so honored.

All in all, Roxbury Community College is not only a vibrant, flourishing educational institution offering a quality education to all who enroll.

It is your “Gateway to the Dream.”
